FAQ &
RIDING GUIDE

Everything you need to know before renting a bike in Pattaya — licences, costs, tips, and local knowledge.

People Also Ask

Yes — foreigners can absolutely rent a motorbike in Thailand, and it's one of the most popular ways to get around Pattaya. You'll need a valid driving licence from your home country.

We strongly recommend carrying an International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your national licence. Police checkpoints do happen in Pattaya, and riding without one can result in a fine of up to ฿2,000.

🇬🇧 UK riders: You can get an IDP at any Post Office for just £3. It takes 5 minutes and is valid for 12 months. Don't leave home without it — a ฿2,000 fine is about £45. Sorted for £3 is a no-brainer.

If you're comfortable on two wheels — absolutely yes. Renting a scooter in Pattaya is the single best way to explore the city on your own terms. Taxis and tuk-tuks are expensive and slow; a bike gives you total freedom.

  • Park anywhere — beaches, temples, night markets
  • Skip the Beach Road traffic completely
  • Reach Jomtien, Koh Larn ferry, Khao Chi Chan in minutes
  • Day trips to Rayong, Kanchanaburi or the mountains

Start with a smaller automatic like the Honda Click or PCX 160 if it's your first time in Thai traffic. Always wear your helmet — police enforce it and it's just good sense.

At Speed Bike Pattaya, prices start from just ฿250/day. Here's a quick overview:

BikeDailyWeekly28 Days
Honda Click 125 / Giorno 125฿250฿1,200฿3,600
Honda Click 160 / PCX 160฿250–280฿1,600–1,650฿4,900–5,000
Honda ADV 160 / Yamaha NMAX฿300฿1,800–1,960฿5,000–5,600
Yamaha Aerox 155฿300฿1,800฿5,000
Honda Forza 350 / X-MAX 300 / ADV 350฿790฿4,500฿14,000

Longer rentals save you significantly — a monthly rental works out to less than ฿130/day on smaller bikes.

No — a UK CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) certificate is not required to rent or ride a bike in Thailand. Thailand doesn't recognise the CBT as a standalone qualification.

What you do need is:

  • A full driving licence from your home country (UK, EU, US, Australian etc.)
  • An International Driving Permit (IDP) — highly recommended
💡 UK tip: Your full UK car licence (category B) covers you for bikes up to 50cc in Thailand. For anything above that, you technically need a motorcycle licence or IDP endorsed for motorcycles. In practice, an IDP from the Post Office (£3) is the easiest way to stay legal and avoid any issues at checkpoints.
Riding Guide

Tips for Riding in Pattaya

01

Get Your IDP Before You Fly

UK riders — pop into any Post Office and grab an International Driving Permit for £3. It takes 5 minutes and covers you for 12 months. Police checkpoints in Pattaya are common, especially on Sukhumvit Road. Riding without it risks a ฿2,000 fine (about £45). One checkpoint and you've paid 15x the cost of the permit.

02

Always Wear Your Helmet

It's the law and police enforce it — especially on the main roads. A helmet fine is ฿500 and you'll also get waved through checkpoints much faster. All our bikes come with a free helmet included. Wear it every ride, even short ones.

03

Stick to the Left & Watch the Trucks

Thailand drives on the left. The biggest danger for new riders isn't speed — it's large trucks and buses pulling out at junctions with no warning. Give them plenty of space. Avoid Sukhumvit Road during rush hour (7–9am, 5–7pm) until you're comfortable with the traffic flow.

04

Choose the Right Bike

First time in Thailand? Start with an automatic scooter — Honda Click, PCX 160 or Giorno. They're light, easy to handle and perfect for city riding. If you're experienced and want to explore further — Koh Chang, the mountains, long highway runs — step up to the Forza 350 or X-MAX 300.

05

Watch Out for Wet Roads

Pattaya's rainy season runs May–October. Roads get slippery fast, especially on the painted lines and road markings. Brake earlier than you think you need to, take corners gently, and consider upgrading to a bike with ABS if you're riding during rainy season.

06

Keep Your Documents on You

Always carry: your passport (or a copy), your home driving licence, your IDP, and your rental agreement from us. If you're stopped at a checkpoint, having all four means you'll be waved through in seconds. Missing any one of them can mean delays, fines, or the bike being impounded.
